BEGINS OCTOBER 5, 2011

@ 6:30 PM

Coached By Christ (CBC) meets every Wednesday October through March.  We meet at Lakeview Bible Church (1651 Avenue Q, Carter Lake, IA).  CBC is for children 4 years old through 5th grade.  CBC is a Scripture memorization program and is designed to help children hide God's Word in their hearts.

Children earn points throughout the year for memorizing verses, bringing friends, wearing a CBC shirt, bringing their book, Bible and dues (50 cents), and attending Sunday school.  At the end of the year, we convert points into CBC "dollars" and the children get to spend their money at the CBC store.

Every Wednesday evening the students enjoy:
learning more about the Bible, Jesus and how Jesus wants us to live;
playing games;
eating snacks;
earning prizes;
seeing friends; and
having LOTS of fun.

If you need a ride call  the church at 347-6440 or our van ministry (Kousgaards) at 347-6464.

Attitude is Everything,

So Pick a Good One

-- from Gospel Light, Sunday school curriculum...by Christian Psychologist, Tom Prinz

Have you ever noticed that a positive attitude is like a cold - it's contagious!  Have you also noticed that our attitude is influenced by both thoughts and feelings?  And for a Christian, the most important consideration is recognition that God is in control.  We can have a positive attitude because we truly believe "that in all things God works for the good of those who love him" (Romans
8:28)

One of the greatest challenges to maintaining a positive attitude has to be parenting children!  Our children seem to learn at an early age how to push our buttons and routinely cause us to do and say things that we wouldn't normally consider doing or saying.  And eventually they learn how to multitask - that is, push several of our buttons simultaneously!

The first factor in maintaining a positive attitude in the face of challenges is acceptance.  In other words, don't take it personally.  Your darling child is going to scream, pout, spill food, break dishes, interrupt you, ignore you, interrogate you and inevitably, exasperate you.  The temptation is to take it personally; searching for the reasons you are failing as a parent.  Actually, your child is just behaving like a child - exploring everything and testing everything while moving at the speed of light!

The best thing you can do when your

child is driving you crazy is to take a step back

and remember what you were doing at his or her age.

The second aspect of maintaining a positive attitude is realizing that your chills will grow out of it.  After all, you did!  The best thing you can do when your child is driving you crazy is to take a step back and remember what you were doing at his or her age.  But avoid the trap of projecting yourself onto your child.  Simply try to see the situation from his or her point of view, and realize that your child isn't really trying to drive you crazy!

Maintaining a positive attitude is significant because it allows us to provide a sage place for our children to live, a home where there is positive affirmation.  Does that mean that we ignore the bad behavior?  Absolutely not.  But it does mean that we always let our children know that they are loved and accepted for the people that they are.  Someone has said that children are like flowers:  Love them and they will bloom.  This can be accomplished through our tone of voice, getting at eye level to talk instead of towering over them, giving hugs and kisses, as well as telling them why they are special and unique creations of God.  Striving to see your children as God does is the best way to cultivate a positive attitude.

A Challenge to You

  1. Discuss with your spouse or a friend how your parents did or did not demonstrate a positive attitude toward you as you were growing up. What effect did it have on you?

  1. Talk about specific situations in which you need to be more positive toward your children.  Suggest ways that you could be more accepting and affirming.
